Tax Credits & Gas Holidays & Stimulus Checks -- Oh My!

Barack Obama says the way to help out the average American is with tax cuts and credits.
Hillary Clinton says we should have a happy gasoline tax holiday this summer!
Don't even get me started on the "stimulus" package.
All the presidential candidates, including John McCain, want us to believe that they're just like us -- regular folks who have to worry about how to afford filling up the tank and whether clipping coupons makes sense.
Yup, just ordinary people.
They all want us to believe they understand our budgets and our lives, but none of them really do. When was the last time any of them had to stop by the Giant with just a $5 bill in their wallet and realize they couldn't afford bread AND milk?
Don't get me wrong -- I'm glad my parents are going to be getting a few hundred dollars from the feds. But they're not going to be taking advantage of all the deals egging consumers on to spend their checks on big screen TVs.
My mom and dad will be buying groceries for the Memorial Day picnic they're having. I'm not talking anything fancy -- hot dogs, BBQ and potato salad will pretty much be it.
I'm going to use an unpopular word here -- they don't get it, because they are all elite.
And that's OK. Given the last few years, I'd like my next president to be "elite" -- "the choice or best of anything considered collectively, as of a group or class of persons," according to dictionary.com.
But while they're busy trying to convince us that they have our best interests at heart, I have an idea for them. Barack, Hillary, John -- if you really want to find a way to help give families a tax break, close all the tax loopholes for huge corporations and make them pay their fair share.
If the feds would spend their time going after corporate taxpayers, think of the real tax cuts the government could make. The government could lower everyone's taxes across the board, rather than creating a $500 tax cut here or a $400 tax credit there. Now THAT would spell r-e-l-i-e-f.
Of course, such a proposal before getting into the White House would damage a candidates' efforts to raise campaign contributions from the fat cats running those very corporations, so I get it -- you're not going to hear anyone come out and actually say that we should look more to large corporations to fund our government than to individual taxpayers.
The answer is that easy. But obviously the easy thing is too difficult.

Here's the problem that no
Here's the problem that no one really wants to face. We're too late!! The option for a quick easy painless solution is no more because we've created a vicious circle for ourselves with our dependency on foreign oil. At this point, given the situation that we're in, the only options we have are going to be painful for our nation.
What really needs to happen, first of all, is to bring OPEC to it's knees. An embargo on all foreign oil for the term of 5 years. We have more than enough in our national stockpile to sustain our country for that time. We use this time to establish more wells and rigs in Alaska to build up our supply.
That's only a start. The next part is going to upset a lot of people but at this point, when we're in this deep of a hole, maybe the best solution isn't straight up. We need to look at the possibility of lowering corporate taxes. This can create more jobs and maybe even eliminate our unemployment rate and increase national spending by having more americans in the working force. Along with this cut though also comes the deal breaker that the savings they receive HAVE to be passed on to consumers in the way of price deflation.
I guarantee you'll see the value of the dollar skyrocket, the morale of the american people skyrocket, and also might even enable us to bring home thousands of troops that are fighting at the moment solely to protect the nations that are providing us with the oil that is coincidently driving our country into a record recession.
I don't know the answer, but
I don't know the answer, but I am so frusturated with the rising cost of living. Meanwhile, my pay has not increased in order to "catch up" with the rest of my expenses. These are hard times for everyone but the rich. My family is stuck in an income bracket where we make to much to get any assistance, but too little to pay for all of our needs. I just hope things take a turn for the better soon
I agree with anonymous
I agree with anonymous above. The problem is, as it has always been, waste of money. I've even seen schools waste money, I've seen local governments waste money, I've seen city councils waste money. Prioritizing where the money goes and then showing it all on a website where all of it exactly goes, even how much money they spend on paper clips is what is needed.
I even like the idea of getting rid of federal taxes and just going to a sales tax. But then all the accountants would be out of a job. :)
But I am tired of people in America complaining about the unemployment rate (4-5%) when the rest of the world suffers from 20% or more. Its crazy.
Corporate Tax
If you tax the coporations more, they will employ less people. That doesn't solve anyones problem. The corporate tax rate in the USA is one of the highest in the world.

I do agree that all politicians are elites, but I do not want to live in a socialist economy. The USA has the lowest unemployment rate in the world. If you increase taxes to add benefits, you will also decrease jobs.
