As U.S. House Moves to Protect Women’s Access to Abortion Care, Nation’s Moms Want U.S. Senate to Do the Same!
Lisa Lederer, 202/371-1996
“The Women’s Health Protection Act and the Ensuring Access to Abortion Act are essential legislation that will protect health and save lives in the dangerous post-Roe world the U.S. Supreme Court has created. The Dobbs ruling and the state abortion bans and restrictions it allows have already created immense suffering and chaos across the country, with low-income women, women of color, young, rural and immigrant women, people with disabilities, and those who are LGBTQ+ suffering the most. America’s moms are grateful to House leaders for bringing these bills to a vote, to the bills’ sponsors, and to every representative who supported them today.
“But passage in the House is not enough. It is past time the U.S. Senate pass the protections that women, moms and pregnant people urgently need. There is simply no excuse for the Senate not to pass these bills, even if doing so requires making an exception to the filibuster. Every Senator should recognize that restoring access to reproductive health care is a national emergency since the Supreme Court stripped away women’s autonomy, our right to be free and equal members of society, and our ability to access the reproductive health care we need.
“Most people who have abortions are moms, and moms want abortion care to be accessible to all who need it. Being able to choose if we have children, and if so, when and how many children to have, which includes access to abortion care, is a fundamental right. The same people who support abortion bans have long opposed free birth control, improved maternal health care, paid family and medical leave, protections for pregnant and lactating workers, affordable child care, and other measures that support healthy children and families. Reproductive rights are human rights. Forced births and denials of health care are never okay.”
