Georgia Supreme Court Abortion Ruling Will Perpetuate Harm to State’s Moms and Families

“It is terribly disappointing that the Georgia Supreme Court is allowing the state’s devastating six-week abortion ban to stand while a lower court reconsiders it. Every day access to abortion care is restricted or denied is a day when the health and lives of moms and pregnant people are endangered.
“Moms applaud the ACLU of Georgia, SisterSong, and the other organizations that are fighting in the courts to restore and secure our access to abortion care. And we remind lawmakers that just because courts rule that they can ban or restrict abortion care does not mean they should. Abortion is health care, and abortion bans are causing immense hardship and chaos in Georgia and across our country. Moms, women of color, low-income women, young, rural and immigrant women, people with disabilities, and those who are LGBTQIA+ are suffering the most.
“At this time when Georgia’s maternal mortality crisis is getting even worse, moms want lawmakers to improve maternal health care and support families by making child care affordable, establishing a comprehensive paid leave program, providing food and nutrition supports, and more – not deny access to the health care we need. Most people who have abortions are moms, and moms want abortion care to be accessible to all who need it, regardless of where they live, their financial status, or the source of their health coverage. Being able to choose if we have children and if so, when and how many to have, which includes access to abortion care, is a fundamental right. Abortion bans are harmful and devastating. America’s moms want them to end.”
