House Republicans Betray Our Democracy by Passing the SAVE Act
Lisa Lederer, 202/371-1996
“Every U.S. Representative who voted to pass the SAVE Act today chose voter suppression over our democracy. The Republican unity on this bill is a disgrace and a betrayal of our core values as a nation. The U.S. Senate must reject it.
“The SAVE Act would do nothing to make our elections safer. Instead, it would make it more difficult for people to vote by forcing them to show a birth certificate or passport when they register. It would threaten the mail and online voter registration that millions of people use and make it enormously difficult for the more than 21 million people in our country who are without easy access to documents that prove their citizenship. It would create barriers to voting for nearly 69 million married women who changed their names so they no longer match the names on their birth certificates – and for 60 million rural Americans, some of whom would have to cross state lines to register; with some in Alaska and Hawaii being forced to take plane rides to do so. Military voters, trans people, tribal voters, survivors of natural disasters and young and elderly people who may have trouble accessing these documents, and Black, Indigenous, Hispanic, Asian, and other people of color could also struggle.
“States already have highly effective laws in place to secure our elections. America’s moms want the U.S. Senate to reject the SAVE Act, which is a dangerous anti-voter bill designed to create barriers that prevent low-income voters and those in marginalized communities from voting. It has no place in a healthy democracy.”
