National Nonprofit Leaders Urge Democrats to Vote 'No' On House Stopgap Measure

Washington, DC – In case you missed it, leaders in the nonprofit space, who represent constituents across the country, held a press call yesterday urging Senate Democrats to stay united in their opposition to the House passed continuing resolution (CR), which would make major cuts to programs families rely on, as well as provide a blank check to fund Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s extreme agenda.
Leaders on yesterday’s call are instead urging the Senate to pass a clean, short-term CR introduced by Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) and Representative Rosa DeLauro (D-CA), which would allow Congress time to go back to the negotiating table and pass a bipartisan, long-term spending bill.

See below for pull quotes from the press call:
Fatima Goss Graves, president of the National Women’s Law Center Action Fund: “The Trump-Republican CR that passed the House was reckless, it was partisan, and it was unprecedented…. We are joining together to call on Senate Democrats to reject this dangerous partisan proposal. And instead, there is an alternative, ready and at the waiting. They can support the clean, short-term continuing resolution that was introduced by Senator Murray and Representative DeLauro.”
Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, executive director/CEO and co-founder of MomsRising Together: “Passage of this CR in the Senate would only exacerbate an already very bad situation for America’s moms, parents, families, small businesses, farmers, and economy. The House Republicans’ continuing resolution would cut billions from programs which are the foundation of economic success for moms and families. And they would put Elon Musk – a greedy billionaire, who couldn’t care less about our health and wellbeing – and DOGE in charge.”
Deborah Weinstein, executive director on the Coalition on Human Needs: “To protect people from harm, the Senate must stop this blank check to Trump and Musk and vote for a short-term bill so that Congress can come to bipartisan agreement on spending bills that meet needs – that use Congress’ power of the purse to assure enough Social Security staff and offices to assist people with disabilities and older adults and a functioning Department of Education that assures all children and college students access to education.”
Elizabeth Beavers, Congress Watch director of Public Citizen: “To Democrats: don’t vote for this. There is no reason to vote for this. But I am going to challenge the Republicans too – you don’t have to go
along with this, it’s not done yet, you don’t have to go along with this plan…You are still an elected member of Congress. You are still an elected Senator. You can operate independently of the Trump and Musk clown show, and take back the power of the purse and assert it.”
David Kass, executive director of Americans for Tax Fairness Action Fund: “As you look at this CR, one of the most egregious pieces is a giant gift to billionaire donors. How? It would rescind $20 billion worth of funding to the IRS that specifically enforces our tax code. So if you lose that money, it will really hurt the agency’s ability to go after wealthy tax cheats… So make no mistake: Congressional Republicans and any member of Congress who votes for this bill are choosing wealthy tax cheats over workers and families.”
Yesterday, the Coalition on Human Needs sent a letter urging Senators to reject the House passed CR that cuts funding for human needs. Read their letter here.
