“It was frankly stomach-churning this afternoon to see President Trump and his Republican cronies celebrating an Executive Order that will cause grave and irreparable harm to our children. There is nothing to celebrate about an Order that guts the education system we rely on to prepare them to contribute to our economy and our society. Today’s Executive Order will undermine the success of our students and the viability of our workforce, now and for years to come.

“America’s moms know that gutting staff and dismantling the U.S. Department of Education is part of the Trump administration’s grand scheme to redirect the funds currently used to educate our kids to instead line the pockets of greedy billionaires like Elon Musk. We object, and we reject the twisted values and skewed priorities that underlie this action.

“Ninety percent of students, and 95% of those with disabilities, attend public schools. Dismantling the Department will mean larger class sizes, more schools without books and equipment and in disrepair, an end to many tutoring programs and remedial services, less impact for our special education laws, more of the 7.4 million students with disabilities unable to learn, and more unchecked discrimination against students of color, girls, and others who face bias and harassment. Millions of students — particularly those in underfunded and rural communities — will lose access to the resources that can help them thrive. Dismantling the Department will also undermine our career and technical education system, our businesses, our STEM- and military-readiness, and more.

“Attacks on our public education system are attacks on our children and their future. America’s families depend on a federally supported, strong public education system to give the next generation the tools and resources to succeed. Education is a pathway to opportunity and to a workforce, economy, and country that can thrive. It is deeply disturbing and truly shameful that the Trump administration is destroying that.”
