Shameful! House Republicans Put Politics Over Our Kids By Passing So-Called ‘Parents Bill of Rights’ Today.

“U.S. House Republicans demonstrated once again today that they are badly out of touch with the country’s moms and families when they passed the badly misnamed ‘Parents Bill of Rights’ – ugly, divisive legislation designed to undermine public education by bringing censorship, bigotry and strife into our schools. This legislation may be masquerading as a bill of rights but it is actually a blueprint for censorship, bullying, division and book bans. It is all wrong for America’s moms, kids, families, and educators.
“Classrooms are no place for the culture wars Republicans like to incite. If it were to become law, this bill would do enormous damage to our kids, schools and communities. Already, in states like Florida that have adopted similar legislation, we are seeing books pulled off school and library shelves; historic figures and events such as Rosa Parks, Anne Frank and the Trail of Tears being erased; and trans and LGBTQIA+ students becoming targets. America’s moms – and America’s voters – reject all that and are horrified by the attacks on educators and public schools. We want every school to be safe and inclusive and to value diversity, and every student to have the best possible chance to learn and succeed.
“America’s moms, caregivers and families want lawmakers to reject, not foment, the ‘us vs. them’ mentality and to immediately turn their attention to passing the caregiving and other supports that will allow all families to succeed. This country’s moms want Congress to support affordable child, elder and disability care; paid family and medical leave; fair pay; health care and medications we can afford; vastly improved maternal health care for all of us; the ability to make our own decisions about if, when and how many children to have; and laws that will end the scourge of gun violence and keep our children, streets, schools and communities safe. Our Moms Rising for Freedom Agenda lists ten key policies moms really want and lawmakers should support. That is how we build a society in which all our children and families can thrive.”
