Statement “At tonight’s Democratic debate, we heard Hillary Clinton, Martin O’Malley and Bernie Sanders outspokenly advocate for the expansion of paid family and medical leave in the U.S. to resounding applause.
Plain and simple, this issue is on the agenda for American voters - and no candidate can expect to get elected without having a plan to update our outdated policies so our families and businesses have the basic economic tools they need to succeed.

Statement “MomsRising members across the Washington, D.C. metro area are thrilled to see today’s introduction of the D.C. Universal Paid Leave Act of 2015. Every day, we hear from our members about the economic challenges they face because they don’t have paid family or medical leave, forcing them to lose pay to care for a newborn, personal illness, or an ailing family member. This legislation would make D.C. the first city in the nation to provide paid family and medical leave for all workers.

Statement “On the issue of paid family and medical leave – which has long been a critical one for our organization – Senator Rubio’s proposal to provide tax credits to employers that offer that leave is not the answer. It doesn’t go far enough. We need comprehensive paid family leave insurance legislation that covers all workers and is affordable. This proposal doesn’t meet those criteria.

News release Under federal guidelines, workers who earn more than $23,600 a year (which is below the poverty line for a family of four) are not automatically eligible for overtime pay. The U.S. Department of Labor has proposed a rule to raise the earning threshold for overtime pay to $50,440 annually by 2016. This increase would make it easier for nearly 5 million workers, more than half of them women, to receive overtime pay at time-and-a-half (150 percent of their regular wage for hours worked over 40 per week).

News release MomsRising today praised North Carolina lawmakers for listening to the safety concerns of moms and families by passing an omnibus gun bill through the state Senate that protects the pistol permit system and leaves out a number of dangerous provisions included in the original legislation introduced in the state House this spring. At the same time, MomsRising remains concerned about a handful of provisions still in the bill that undermine existing gun laws, and vows to continue pressing for commonsense guns safety laws.
