A Punishing Blow: Trump’s Heartless New SNAP Rule Will Cause More Hunger, Hardship in America

“Hundreds of thousands more people in our country will go hungry if President Trump’s Department of Agriculture is allowed to revise eligibility requirements for SNAP, as announced this morning. This is one more attack on struggling families from an administration without heart or compassion and a brazen attempt to do through regulation what Congress refused to do through legislation: Make it harder for hungry families to get the food and nutrition they need.
“Slashing food assistance for hundreds of thousands of people who are struggling to find stable work would be a punishing blow that causes very real harm to families across the country. If the courts do not block it, this rule will bring more hunger to America, forcing many more families to make impossible choices between food, on the one hand, and heat and shelter on the other. Making someone hungrier won’t help them find work any faster.
“In Donald Trump’s America, the rich get richer and struggling families suffer. The Republican tax bill was a huge windfall for ultra-wealthy individuals and Wall Street’s mega-corporations; now the Trump administration wants to pay for it by cutting food stamps to struggling families. Withholding food assistance from people who are searching for stable work won’t help them get good jobs. It will deepen their struggles and exacerbate their pain. This is not what the moms of America want.
“States need the flexibility to issue waivers that exempt select people from the requirement that they obtain steady employment in order to receive food stamps. People who are working hard to find a job shouldn't also have to worry about finding their next meal. Not every family has felt the recovery from our still-unstable economy. SNAP is often the program standing between hunger and food. This rule will cause grave harm.”
