America’s Moms Oppose Government Shutdown, Urge House Republicans to Reject Extreme Partisanship and Instead Support Moms and Families

“America’s moms have been watching with concern that’s turned into full-scale alarm as Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives have sent the country careening toward a government shutdown that will cause massive hardship, chaos, and economic pain. Moms are horrified that House Republicans have utterly failed to do their most basic duty by passing a budget for Fiscal Year 2024, which begins this weekend. Instead of manufacturing an avoidable crisis, moms want Congress to pass a budget that addresses the most pressing concerns families face, including averting the looming child care ‘cliff’ so moms can stay in the workforce, protecting maternal health, ensuring food security for everyone–including fully funding WIC, and building a care infrastructure with paid leave, a permanently expanded Child Tax Credit, fair and living wages, elder and disability care, and more.
“Moms are horrified that House Republicans have chosen partisanship and extremism over the priorities of moms, families, and our national economy. We do not want government workers and those in the military, and the contractors who depend on them, to have their economic security undermined and their lives upended. The role of government is to support the health and wellbeing of families, stabilize and strengthen our economy, and protect our democracy. Holding the budget hostage to hyper-partisan, deeply unpopular measures – such as slashing funding for WIC and SNAP, demonizing immigrants and the LGBTQIA+ community, further jeopardizing our reproductive health, and attacking education and our environment – is intolerable.
“Moms want Congress to pass a budget that lifts moms, children, families, and our economy now.”
