As Trump Undermines the U.S. Postal Service, He Threatens Our Democracy and Intensifies Our Struggles

Statement of Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, executive director and CEO of MomsRising, an online and on-the-ground organization of more than one million mothers and their families, on President Trump’s admission that he won’t fund the U.S. Postal Service because he wants to prevent mail-in voting:

“America’s moms are horrified and disgusted by what President Trump said this morning, all but admitting he is withholding U.S. Postal Service funding in order to make mail-in voting impossible this year. People rely on the mail to get life-saving medications, checks that allow them to buy food and pay the rent, and bills they need to pay. In rural communities, the postal service plays an even greater role in community life. It is a major employer of veterans. Clearly none of that matters at all to President Trump.

“Instead of recognizing the delays in mail delivery as the emergencies they are, he is focused on himself, his naked political ambitions, and his brazen quest to make mail-in voting impossible. He cares not at all about the rest of us – or our democracy. All that is meaningless wreckage to him as he tries to suppress the vote and distract us from the excruciatingly painful fact that yesterday, nearly 1,500 people in this country died of COVID-19.

“We are in the middle of a public health crisis that is making it difficult to enlist poll workers and impossible for many people to vote without jeopardizing their health and their lives. Every elected official should be working to strengthen and protect the U.S. Postal Service and make it as easy as possible for all of us to vote safely. President Trump is once again demonstrating that he is a disgrace to his office and a profound threat to our democracy.”
