As U.S. Senate Votes for Sham Acquittal of a Guilty President, Moms Leader Warns that 'America’s Moms Will Long Remember This Vote'

Statement of Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, executive director and CEO of MomsRising Together, an on-the-ground organization of more than one million mothers and their families, on the U.S. Senate vote not to hold President Trump accountable for his crimes:

“Today, in a stunning failure to protect our country and honor their oath, a slim majority of U.S. Senators voted for a sham acquittal of President Trump for abusing his power and obstructing Congress – the appalling crimes for which he was deservedly impeached. 

“Moms across America are appalled by this miscarriage of justice. 

“Moms also applaud the U.S. House managers, who did a masterful job of compiling and presenting overwhelming evidence of President Trump’s guilt; they and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi deserve the thanks of a grateful nation for working so hard to defend our democracy. However, following a trial in which Senators made a mockery of justice by refusing to hear from witnesses or consider evidence, the Senate refused to hold Trump accountable. Moms know that every Senator who ignored the fact that Trump used his influence and taxpayers’ money to try to coerce Ukraine into interfering in our elections for his personal gain put party over patriotism, abdicated their duty, and utterly failed their country.

“We commend the bi-partisan U.S. Senators who voted to hold President Trump accountable, but our nation will pay a terrible price for this shameful vote. The notion that President Trump has learned his lesson is absurd. We saw last night, during his State-of-the-Union address, that he has been emboldened. For him now, no lie is too big, no insult too cruel, no hate-mongering too dangerous, no distortion too divisive. This sneak peek at the unchastened Trump was chilling.

“The moms of America know that this sham trial was an epic failure – a betrayal that will cause profound and lasting harm. America’s moms will long remember this vote, as will every American.”
