At Last, Progress on Gun Safety – But the U.S. Senate Agreement Is Just a Start

Statement of leaders of MomsRising, the online and on-the-ground organization of more than one million mothers and their families, on the agreement among U.S. Senators announced Sunday on a framework for a new federal gun safety law:

“It took the devastating mass shootings in Buffalo, Uvalde and Tulsa to finally bring recalcitrant Republican Senators to the table. They have now agreed to some level of process for gun purchasers under age 21, federal funds to support state Red Flag laws, closing the loophole on gun sales that put dangerous weapons in the hands of domestic abusers, and other steps. Further investments in mental health services and safety must mean creating a substantial counseling, mental health support, and care infrastructure in schools and not more police interaction with students.

“The pain suffered by parents, families, schools and communities who have lost loved ones to gun violence has been unbearable, and it needs to end. There must be further progress on gun safety reform, including ending the use of high-capacity magazines and military-style assault weapons, so we can finally send our children to school and onto our streets, and shop, seek medical care, attend movies and concerts, go to clubs, and in other ways live our lives without fear of mass shootings.”

“The steps announced last weekend are important in finally tackling our country’s gun violence crisis – but we urgently need more action, including bans on assault rifles and high-capacity magazines, bump stocks and ghost guns, and a measure to raise the age at which people can purchase weapons of mass destruction to 25.

“Lawmakers have ignored the safety of our children and communities for much too long. Guns are everywhere, and the public needs much more protection from their lethal pervasiveness. America’s moms do not want to raise our children in a country where no one is safe, where mass shootings are commonplace, where there are more guns than people. No mother, father, parent, child, son, daughter, or community should ever have to endure losses like those that have become commonplace in our nation. This is just a first step toward the progress we need.”
