Social Media Project Complements on-the-Ground Actions Remembering Sandy Hook Victims on Six-Month Anniversary of Shootings
Thousands of Americans have died from gun violence this year alone, and still there has been no action from Congress on passing what the majority of Americans support – universal background checks to save lives and make our communities safer.
As part of the ongoing effort to push for passage of gun violence prevention legislation, Momsrising.org, the online and on-the-ground grassroots organization for moms and everyone who has a mom, worked with PICONetwork, UltraViolet, Children's Defense Fund and the National Network to End Domestic Violence to organize a blog carnival that features blog posts from moms, dads and others around the country who want to end gun violence. Entitled Sorrow, Anger, ACTION! - A Gathering of Voices Against Gun Violence, this social media project complements the memorial activities of the Newtown Action Alliance on the occasion of the half-year anniversary of the shooting tragedy that devastated their community. Sorrow, Anger, ACTION! is live now at:
The blog carnival coincides with Newtown vigil activities that advocates for gun safety will today in their home communities to commemorate the six-month anniversary of the tragic shooting.
In the days leading up to the June 14 half-year anniversary of Newtown, members of the Newtown Action Alliance hand-delivered letters to key legislators in the Senate and in the House of Representatives. The letters appealed to lawmakers to revisit S. 649, the Safe Communities, Safe Schools Act of 2013 and to support the Manchin-Toomey Amendment No. 715, which protects Second Amendment rights, ensures the effectiveness of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, and provides a responsible and consistent background check process. Accompanying the letters were lists of Americans who have been killed since December 14, 2012.
At noon on June 13, the Newtown Action Alliance, Momsrising.org and other concerned citizens met on the Capitol steps to form a Human Ribbon of Remembrance in memory of the 26 children and educators we lost six months ago as well as the many other Americans we’ve lost to senseless acts of gun violence prior to and since that tragic day.
