Essential Preventive Health Care for Moms, Families Imperiled By Today’s District Court Ruling
Lisa Lederer, 202/371-1996
“Today’s ruling by District Court Judge Reed O’Connor puts the health of moms, children, and more than 150 million people at grave and unnecessary risk. The relentless legal and political attacks on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) are cruel, outrageous, and deeply harmful. Because of this lawsuit, brought by extremist opponents of the ACA who again cherry-picked a judge to hear their case, fewer people will get prenatal care and preventive screenings, fewer cancers will be detected early when they are more treatable, fewer mental health problems will be identified and treated, fewer people will get immunizations and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases, and many more people in the United States will suffer and die. Low-income communities and communities of color will suffer the most as health care costs rise, putting life-saving preventive care out of reach for millions.
“America’s moms are grateful that the Biden administration will immediately appeal this devastating ruling, and urge the courts to stay and overturn it. Until that happens, we call on every employer and every insurer to continue full coverage for preventive services. Our health – for some of us, our survival – depends on it.”
