Even the Republican-Controlled Senate Agrees: There Is No National Emergency

Statement of Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, Executive Director and CEO of MomsRising, an online and on-the-ground organization of more than one million mothers and their families, on today’s Senate vote to reject President Trump’s bogus declaration of a national emergency:

“America’s moms recognize the President’s declaration of a national emergency as the violation of presidential powers that it is. We urge President Trump to respect the checks and balances our constitution guarantees and refrain from vetoing the joint resolution the U.S. Senate passed today with support from 59 senators. It’s past time President Trump put the country’s interests ahead of his own. Our democracy is on the line.

“We applaud every senator from either party who showed courage and integrity in rejecting President Trump’s reckless, politically motivated, bogus declaration of a national emergency and instead supported the joint resolution to disapprove of the measure. They stood on principle this afternoon by supporting this joint resolution.

“Both chambers of Congress have now joined the majority of Americans in rejecting the President’s manufactured national emergency. The country neither wants, nor needs, a wall that will stand forever as a symbol of hate. We know we can do better and be better than this -- protect our democracy -- and be greater than the fear President Trump is spreading.”
