This weekend, Montgomery County families will come together for a special family Play Day featuring storytime, healthy treats, face painting, animal balloons, arts and crafts and much more, while they show their support for paid sick days legislation in Montgomery County.
The event, hosted by MomsRising and Jews United for Justice, will be held:
3pm – 4:30pm, Sunday, June 7
Ohr Kodesh Congregation
8300 Meadowbrook Lane
Chevy Chase, MD
Another Play Day will be held from 2pm to 3:30pm on the same day in Gaithersburg, Maryland at Kehilat Shalom located at 9915 Apple Ridge Road.
The Chevy Chase Play Day will feature reading of the award-winning storybook, A Sick Day for Amos McGee by Philip C. Stead.
In Montgomery County, four in ten workers do not have access to paid sick days that would allow them to stay home to take care of a sick child or other family member, or tend to their own health. That leaves workers with the impossible choice between going to work sick and possibly sending a child to school sick or losing a day’s pay or possibly a job.
New legislation under consideration by the Montgomery County Council would ensure that all Montgomery County's working parents have paid time off to care for children or to get better themselves. Bill 60-14, the Earned Safe and Sick Leave bill would allow all workers to earn one hour of leave for every 30 hours worked, with a maximum of 56 hours a year.
This event is part of Mission Possible: Building a Strong Economy for Families, Women and the Nation, a national campaign coordinated by a coalition of more than 30 national organizations. It is one of dozens being held across the country this year between Mother's Day and Father's Day.
