H.B. 10 Would Harm North Carolina Moms, Families, Schools, and the State’s Economy

“North Carolina moms are urging Governor Roy Cooper to veto H.B. 10, which would make our state less safe, our schools less successful, and our economy less strong. This legislation is anti-immigrant, anti-education, and gravely harmful. It would force local sheriffs to collaborate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), undermining community trust in law enforcement while failing to protect immigrant victims of sexual assault, domestic violence and other crimes. It would discourage immigrants from reporting crimes and serving as witnesses when they are prosecuted.
“Instead of making much-needed funding available to public schools to hire and retain teachers, bus drivers, and teaching assistants, H.B. 10 would siphon off those funds to instead support vouchers that make it less costly for wealthier families to send their children to private schools. North Carolinians want their tax dollars to be used to fund high quality pre-school and universal free school breakfasts and lunches to stave off child hunger in our state – not to subsidize tuition for private schools.
“Legislators played politics with our future by passing H.B. 10. They should be working to make our state safer, improve our public schools, and make child care and housing affordable. Instead, they are sowing hardship and division. North Carolina moms urge Gov. Cooper to veto this bill and legislators to sustain his veto. It is mean-spirited and harmful and should never become law.”
