It’s Tax Day, 2024. Moms and Families Need Congress to Expand the Child Tax Credit Now.
Lisa Lederer, 202/371-1996
“At this time when millions of moms and families are struggling to pay for child care and health care, and feed and house their families, the country needs the Tax Relief for American Workers and Families Act of 2024 to become law now, while there is still time for the IRS to deliver funds from the expanded Child Tax Credit (CTC) this year. The U.S. House of Representatives passed this bill with strong bipartisan support at the end of January, but a small group of Republicans in the U.S. Senate has refused to get on board, stopping this pro-family, pro-business, anti-poverty legislation from becoming law. That needs to change now.
“Temporarily expanding the CTC would allow more moms to work, take care of their families, and contribute to their communities. It would lift as many as 400,000 children out of poverty this year, while boosting businesses and our economy. Moms want the U.S. Senate to pass it now. Moms and children, businesses, and our economy will be stronger and more successful when they do.”

“With costs remaining stubbornly high and our child care crisis continuing, many families are struggling to make ends meet. The Tax Relief for American Workers and Families Act would help by supporting 16 million children – more than four in five of the roughly 19 million children in families currently excluded from the full credit because their family incomes are too low. It also would funnel badly needed revenues into our local economies.
“The vast majority of America’s voters, across political parties and other demographic lines, support investments in caregiving priorities, according to a recent survey commissioned by MomsRising and the National Women’s Law Center and conducted by Lake Research Partners. This legislation would be a meaningful step forward that helps struggling families. The expanded CTC enacted during the pandemic was a historic step forward in reducing child poverty in our nation. America’s moms want lawmakers to continue the progress. Senate Republicans need to get on board and pass this bill in the weeks ahead.”
