Statement by MomsRising Calling on Romney, Obama To Address Issues Important to Mothers
“We’re not soccer moms on the sidelines, but networked moms on the front lines. We’re paying attention, we're organized, and we’re voting.
More than 80% of women in the United States have children by the time they're forty-four, making moms one of the most important parts of the American public, culturally and electorally. Many of the realities that moms face everyday are not yet being addressed on the campaign trail.
One year of infant daycare now costs more than a year of public college in many states. Nearly a quarter of families with young children live in poverty. Nearly 80 percent of low-wage workers – and approximately 40 percent of private-sector workers – don’t have access to a single paid sick day. Without such policies, having a baby is a leading cause of “poverty spells” in our nation. On top of this, women, particularly moms, still don’t get equal pay for equal work.
The current debate over healthcare is also very serious for moms, as it is for most Americans. With threats to overturn the Affordable Care Act, it is estimated that 129 million Americans under 65 with pre-existing conditions would be at risk of losing their health insurance. Overturning the Affordable Care Act would reduce a mother’s access to healthcare, not only for herself, but for her children, and her other family members, making it harder and harder for American moms to care for their families.
Candidates want the mom vote, but they must address the issues central to women's and mothers' lives. We urge all candidates to speak on out on these policies which are critically important to mothers across the country.”
On Thursday, 06 September 2012, Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner will deliver a speech to the Democratic Women’s Caucus at 10:15am EST. Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner will be speaking as an individual, not on behalf of MomsRising, at the DNC Women's Caucus event.
