Like So Much Gun Violence, the Tragedy at Oxford High School Was Avoidable

“Another tragic school shooting, devastating students, parents, educators and school staff across the nation. Another horrific moment when young lives are lost and families destroyed. Another community terrorized and transformed forever. Another day when lawmakers continue to utterly fail those they are sworn to serve. This cannot continue.
“Yesterday’s school shooting in Oxford, Michigan, which so far has taken four young lives, adds to the terrible toll of gun violence in our country this year. Our hearts break for every victim and all those affected. Our country has more guns than people and, as a result, none of us are safe. Moms want our kids to grow up in communities that are safe, and in schools where they can focus on learning and not be traumatized by drills and lockdowns. We don’t want to worry every morning about whether our kids will come home from school that afternoon.
“This is not how America’s moms want to raise our kids. We want lawmakers to advance gun safety, community safety, and responsible gun ownership. Like the shooter in Michigan, many school shooters get guns from their homes. Safe storage is critical to preventing youth and others who should not have guns from accessing them.
“It’s past time for all our lawmakers to reject the NRA, reject the ‘guns-everywhere’ culture that’s deeply rooted in white supremacy, strengthen America’s gun laws, and build community safety.”
