Mom Leaders Praise Administration for Streamlining Path to Citizenship, Work Authorization for Long-Settled Undocumented Spouses of U.S. Citizens, Because Families Belong Together
Lisa Lederer, 202/371-1996
“The immigration-related actions the Biden/Harris administration took today are the right thing to do and the smart thing to do. America’s moms have long recognized immigrants as our neighbors, friends, family members, community and business leaders, and colleagues who make our communities and our economy stronger and more successful. But too many live in fear of being deported and being separated from the children and spouses they love. That will change for some 500,000 long-settled immigrants and some 50,000 children in mixed-status families, who will now have a path to citizenship, protections from deportation, and access to work permits thanks to the wise, compassionate executive action the administration is taking today. We are especially pleased that more DREAMers will get access to employment-based visas and more stable options. Today’s action will strengthen our country’s caregiving workforce at a time when that is an urgent priority for moms, families, businesses and our economy, and give well-deserved peace of mind to those living in mixed-status families and young people educated in this country.”

“Families – all families – belong together. Today’s action from the Biden/Harris administration to remove barriers to U.S. citizenship for immigrants who have been in the United States for at least ten years and are married to U.S. citizens, and their children, is a welcome move and a necessary one. It is especially important given the shameful fact that Republican leaders in Congress refuse to address immigration – one of the most pressing issues facing our country today. Now, thanks to the Biden/Harris administration, DACA recipients, known as “DREAMers,” and spouses of U.S. citizens, many of whom are caregivers for their families, will no longer have to live under the constant threat that they will be deported and their families separated. This will make families, communities, and our country stronger.”

“Today’s action, to create a path to citizenship for immigrants with deep roots in our country and who have long contributed to its success, has broad public support and addresses a pressing concern of the Latino community. Too many hard-working, tax-paying neighbors, friends, moms, and colleagues live in fear of deportation or that their families will be separated. Separating families does not benefit anyone. Now, undocumented immigrants will be able to help fill labor gaps across the country, including as child, elder and disability caregivers. Keeping families together and allowing more community members to contribute, work, and pay taxes will make our country stronger. President Biden and VP Harris are incredible champions for the care economy moms and working families need. Today’s action adds to that proud record.”
