Moms Applaud U.S. Supreme Court Ruling Allowing Courts to Deny Guns to Domestic Abusers – But the Scourge of Gun Violence Is Far From Over

“On Friday, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 8 – 1 in United States v. Rahimi that it is constitutional under the Second Amendment to temporarily disarm people subjected to domestic violence restraining orders. More than 4.5 million women have reported being threatened with a gun by an intimate partner, and on average 70 women are shot and killed by an intimate partner every month. America’s moms cheer this common-sense ruling, which overturns a horrendous Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals decision that would have resulted in many more injuries and deaths.
“But in preserving this badly needed, lifesaving law, SCOTUS merely began to fix a problem it created. We need much more concern for our safety from SCOTUS, and many more actions from Congress and state lawmakers to prevent gun violence. The fact that SCOTUS even had to rule in this case is a measure of the massive confusion it caused with its earlier 2nd Amendment rulings, which have worsened the danger we all face in a country with more guns than people. Just a few weeks ago, the conservative justices disregarded public safety and personal freedoms when they put our health and safety at risk by ending the ban on bump stocks.
"Last Friday's decision is a victory but there's much more work to do to end the scourge of gun violence that is causing our country massive harm. It's well past time to end the extreme gun culture that paralyzes Congress and costs so many lives, especially of women of color, and destroys our right to raise our children and live our lives safely, to move freely, and to pursue our dreams without fear."
