Moms Cheer House Passage of Bill to Expand the Child Tax Credit, Urge U.S. Senate to Pass It Right Away

“America’s moms cheer tonight’s U.S. House of Representatives vote to pass a bill to temporarily expand the Child Tax Credit (CTC). This expansion, too, will allow people to work, take care of their families, and contribute to our communities. Specifically, this new expansion will lift as many as 400,000 children out of poverty this year and boost businesses and our economy. The U.S. Senate must quickly pass it as well, so moms and children, businesses, and our economy can benefit.
“The country needs the Tax Relief for American Workers and Families Act of 2024, which the House passed with strong bipartisan support, to become law now, at this time when tens of millions of moms and families are struggling to feed and shelter their families and pay for child care. This legislation funnels money directly into our local economies and would benefit 16 million children – more than 80 percent of the roughly 19 million children in families currently excluded from the full credit because their family incomes are too low.
“While this bill does not provide the full benefit to all families that are struggling to make ends meet, nor does it have some of the provisions that were so beneficial during the pandemic, it would help struggling families right now and is a positive step forward. Data show the prior temporary expansion of the CTC allowed people to pay for child care so they can work and take care of their families. In fact, the expanded Child Tax Credit enacted during the pandemic was a historic step forward; America’s moms want lawmakers to continue the progress.”
