In honor of the 50th Anniversary of the historic civil rights march on Washington, MomsRising.org, the online and on-the-ground grassroots organization for moms and everyone who has a mom, is holding a blog carnival on the state of civil rights in our nation today – how far we’ve come and how much further we still need to go.
The carnival, Moms Get Real About Race in America, features posts from a diverse group of women leaders, as well as moms from across the country, frankly discussing issues of race, equal economic opportunity, and justice that affect moms and their families today.
Among the posts are:
- “What Happens to a Dream Deferred,” by Avis Jones DeWeever of Incite Unlimited
- “Fifty Years On: Toward a Politics of Inclusivity,” by Lisalyn Jacobs of Legal Momentum
- “What Does Race Have to Do with a Woman’s Salary? A Lot,” by Katie Benson of the American Association of University women
- “#solidarityisforwhitewomen: Who holds your hands?” by Sili Recio of Miami Ink Media
- “My Blinders Are Off: What Trayvon Taught Me About Parenting,” by Vanessa Bell of De Su Mama
- “All New Mothers Endowed Equally?” by Julie Ajinkya of Political Pregnancy
“We hope that people will take the time to read some of these incisive and thoughtful posts and to reflect on the state of civil rights in our nation today – how far we’ve come and how much further we still need to go,” said MomsRising.org Executive Director Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner. “Even as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s ‘I Have a Dream Speech,’ we owe it to his memory to renew our efforts to fulfill his vision for social justice, equal economic opportunity, and racial healing.”
