Moms Say: Count Every Vote, Protect Our Democracy
Lisa Lederer, 202/371-1996
“This election had historic engagement resulting in record turnout, which is unquestionably good for our democracy. Now, the next step in our democratic process is for every single vote to be counted. The day after the election, one thing is clear: MomsRising members who are Black, Latino, White, Asian, Muslim, Jewish, and Christian mothers, immigrants, moms who are differently abled, trans and gender non-conforming -- and moms at the intersections of those identities -- came together to show up as the powerful force we are and to vote in record numbers.
“Moms and people across the nation braved a pandemic, rampant voter suppression (including last minute closures of voting locations, threats and voter intimidation) to vote, and every ballot must be counted. We thank every person who voted. Your vote is powerful and the moms of America stand with you to make sure it’s counted.”
-Statement of Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, Executive Director and CEO, MomsRising
“Taking time to count every ballot is part of a working democracy. We expected it would take longer than normal to count the votes from this election because, due to the pandemic, there were many more vote-by-mail ballots than normal in states where that type of voting is new. The fact that we don’t have full results yet was expected.
“As voters, we’ve done our job and turned out in record numbers. And now our election officials are doing theirs, as they have in every previous election. America’s moms reject any effort to disenfranchise anyone, be it a voter forced to wait in line for many hours to cast a ballot, a rural voter whose ballot was mailed on time but takes days to arrive, or a member of the military casting a ballot by mail from overseas.”
-Statement of Ruth Martin, Senior Vice President and Chief Workplace Justice Officer, MomsRising
“Moms demand that every vote be counted and we have a result that reflects the will of the people and a peaceful transition. And once the new Congress takes office, we hope immediate first priorities will be to pass the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, to promote integrity and security in our democracy – and to pass the kind of pandemic relief package moms and families so urgently need, as well as policies to advance justice and open doors for every child to thrive.”
