Moms and Kids to Deliver Toy Cows and Constituent Messages to U.S. Senators Urging Action on Gun Safety Legislation
With little kids dressed in cow suits and wearing cow ears themselves, moms from across the DC area will be urging U.S. Senators to “mooo-ve” forward on gun safety legislation and choose families and communities over the gun lobby when they get the chance to vote on meaningful gun policy reform. The moms and kids will be delivering constituent messages, along with toy cows and cow keychains that say, “Don’t be cowed by the gun lobby! Let’s get moooving on gun safety legislation” to Senate offices.
The moms and children will meet at:
10:30 AM, Tuesday, July 9
Senate Hart Building Atrium
Washington, DC
MomsRising.org Executive Director Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner and local MomsRising.org members will provide brief remarks.
At 10:50 AM, the group will head off to visit U.S. Senate offices and deliver the constituent messages, along with toy cows and cow keychains and the message that the nation needs common sense gun laws, such as stronger background checks for gun purchases, restrictions on military-style guns and high-caliber magazines, and severe federal penalties for interstate and international gun trafficking.
Last April, the bipartisan Manchin-Toomey bill, which would have strengthened background checks on gun purchases, failed to pass the Senate by only five votes, in spite of the fact that 90 percent of the public supports such efforts. The leadership of the National Rifle Association (NRA) and their allies pressured Senators to oppose the bill.
Gun safety laws are expected to come up for a vote in the next few months and MomsRising.org and its allies are urging Senators to put aside their fear of the NRA's leadership and its allies and stand up for the safety of families and communities.
