STATEMENT OF Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, Executive Director and Co-Founder, MomsRising, On Passage of Health Reform Legislation
"Today, MomsRising and its more than one million members across the U.S. are applauding the passage of historic legislation many decades in the making – health reform. For too long, families in the United States have been at the mercy of insurance companies that have denied them coverage just when they needed it most and premiums that increase while coverage decreases. Millions of other families have simply gone without the health care they needed because they didn’t have and couldn’t afford health insurance. Passage of this bill expands health insurance coverage to 32 million citizens, guaranteeing that 95 percent of Americans will be covered. Today, these families have hope.
Not only does this legislation provide millions of moms, dads, kids and others with access to healthcare, it will also reduce the federal budget deficit by more than $100 billion over the next ten years. Today Congress helped improve the country’s physical and fiscal health.
For the past year, MomsRising and its members have called, emailed and written to Members of Congress urging them to support health reform. In just the last several months, MomsRising members have made more than 600,000 constituent contacts in support of healthcare for all: meeting with Members of Congress in their district offices, sharing our stories with lawmakers, making phone calls to legislative offices, sending emails and sending messages which were delivered to federal legislators in-person by MomsRising members in Washington, DC. We did all this because as caregivers for our families, moms know how crucial health care is.
Today we applaud the House for this victory for families across the U.S. and we urge the Senate to move quickly on reconciliation and make health care reform a reality."
