MomsRising Opposes Neil Gorsuch for Supreme Court, Calls on Democrats to Block His Appointment

“Neil Gorsuch’s appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court would move the Court in a dangerous direction, one that threatens the rights of women, LGBTQ+ people, people of color and workers.  
 
Judge Gorsuch joined the original Hobby Lobby decision that ruled corporations are people that can hold religious beliefs and that allowed bosses to deny women birth control coverage.  Reports that Gorsuch told his students that companies should ask women about their pregnancy plans during job interviews, as well as his claims that women plan to manipulate their employers by taking maternity leave and then quitting to stay home with their children, prove that he will not be the fair jurist that America’s families and economy need.  His appointment could tip the balance so the Court codifies the worst of the Trump administration into our nation’s laws for a lifetime - something our country simply cannot afford.
 
“More importantly, now is not the time to consider appointing a new justice to the Supreme Court. With the White House currently under investigation, the Senate Judiciary Committee should be solely focused on demanding a thorough and independent investigation into possible collusion between Donald Trump and his associates and the Russian government to influence the 2016 presidential election.  
 
“With so much at stake, it is critical that the U.S. Supreme Court remains an independent check on presidential authority - one that protects the rights of all people and stands firm against discrimination.  
 
“This is a pivotal time in modern American history, and we have a reckless, erratic administration staffed by many people with histories of discriminatory practices. MomsRising’s more than 1 million members know that now is not the time for business as usual. Trump threatens the fabric of our democracy, our national and economic security, and our communities. All U.S. Senators, and particularly Democrats, must use every tool at their disposal to block Gorsuch’s appointment to a U.S. Supreme Court seat that Republicans stole by filibustering Judge Merrick Garland for nearly a year.  
 
“Our future depends on blocking Gorsuch's confirmation. Anything less would be a betrayal of our communities and our country.”
