North Carolina Moms Say ‘No’ to H.B. 10, Want Politicians to Welcome, Not Attack, Immigrant Families

“It’s heartless. Mean-spirited. Divisive. Harmful. House Bill 10, now being considered in the North Carolina House of Representatives, would cause grave harm to immigrant families and communities and to our state. By forcing sheriffs to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), this legislation would put people suspected of minor infractions such as traffic violations at risk for detention for up to 48 hours, and ultimately for deportation. And it would undermine the wisdom and judgment of sheriffs throughout our state.
“If House Bill 10 becomes law, families will be separated. Children traumatized. The trust and cooperation between sheriffs and immigrant communities broken. Immigrant families will be afraid to report serious crimes, leaving all of our communities vulnerable. A climate of fear will shape every aspect of their lives.
“North Carolina moms want our state legislators to reject House Bill 10 and to stop attacking and demonizing our immigrant friends, neighbors, and community members. Together we have the power to reject this divisiveness and the hate that underlies it, and demand our leaders do better for our children and communities.”
