Our Country Will Be Healthier, and Moms and Families Stronger, Because SCOTUS Refused to Strike Down the Affordable Care Act Today
Lisa Lederer, 202/371-1996
“Today’s 7 – 2 U.S. Supreme Court ruling is a major, meaningful victory for moms, families and our country. A U.S. Supreme Court reshaped by former President Trump refused to strike down the ACA, instead ruling, correctly, that those who attacked it had no standing. This is a good outcome for the country.
“This ruling means the 31 million people who have gained coverage through this law, all those who need maternity and mental health care, and the 133 million people with pre-existing conditions, most of whom are women, can breathe a sigh of relief. All those who lost their employer-sponsored coverage in the pandemic are now more secure. All those who needed care after being infected with COVID-19, or will need care as the pandemic continues, will be better off. This is particularly critical to women and moms of color who experienced outsized health and economic harms during the pandemic and throughout our nation’s history.
“This ruling should put to rest the baseless, relentless attacks on the ACA, which has been a tremendous and unequivocal success. It is time for lawmakers to join together to further strengthen our health care system, including doing much more to address racial health disparities, making permanent the improvements in the American Rescue Plan, undoing harmful Trump regulations, extending Medicaid expansion to all states, making coverage universal, securing women’s access to reproductive care, and ensuring we can all afford the medications we need.
“Our country will be healthier, and moms and families stronger, because of today’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling.”
