President Biden’s State of the Union Speech Hit All the Right Notes. Now Moms and Families Need Congress to Act.

“President Biden's State of the Union speech hit all the right notes. The moms of America know the state of our union can only be strong when the country’s moms and families are economically secure, we can all access and afford the health care we need — including abortion care, our tax policies require everyone to pay their fair share, and our immigration and public safety policies are sound. That is the vision President Biden offered the country tonight.
“Moms are heartened that President Biden renewed his administration’s commitment to universal pre-K and affordable child care, to making paid sick days, as well as paid family and medical leave, available to all working people, and to restoring the full Child Tax Credit to bring children and families out of poverty. We are pleased that he committed to making home- and community-based services for seniors and people with disabilities affordable. We cheer his commitment to cutting the cost of insulin and other prescription medications. We applaud his support for tax policies that require the wealthiest individuals and corporations to pay their fair share so we can pay for the priorities families need and deserve. And moms are counting on the Biden administration and Congress to restore our access to reproductive health care, including abortion, and end the immense suffering the Supreme Court caused with its appalling decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization last summer.
“The President is right that we need enhanced background checks before guns can be purchased and a ban on assault weapons to stop the mass shootings that are causing devastation all across our country. He is right that we need Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform, including a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers, those on temporary status, farm workers, and essential workers. We also must ensure that every asylum seeker is treated with dignity, compassion and respect.
“President Biden is right, as well, to raise the heartbreak and grief that comes with losing a child at the hands of the law. But hearing Republicans who continue to block police reform applaud for the family of Tyre Nichols rang hollow. It’s long past time that both parties work harder to stop our over-reliance on police and prisons; end mass incarceration and police violence; and support investments in the schools, services, care, and opportunities that will create the healthy, just communities we all deserve.
“President Biden delivered a wise, reasoned, thoughtful speech tonight, proposing measures that would help build a care infrastructure that allows families, businesses and our economy to thrive and makes our country stronger and more successful. But we will only get there if Congress acts on his proposals. America’s moms are watching.”
