State Legislators Must Reject Callous Abortion Ban, Which Will Undermine the Health and Imperil the Lives of North Carolinians
Lisa Lederer, 202/371-1996
“North Carolina moms are not fooled by the fact that cynical state legislators have included some badly needed, long overdue advances in Senate Bill 20, which at its core is a monstrous bill that will ban abortion in practice after 10 weeks of pregnancy and create often-insurmountable barriers to accessing abortion care, even early in pregnancy. This legislation would place especially huge burdens on rural, low-income, immigrant, and working-class families, people of color, those with disabilities or who are LGBTQIA+, and those who are without access to affordable health care. It would put people needing care for miscarriages at risk and make it much more difficult for women and pregnant people to access medication abortion.
“If state legislators cared about moms and families, they would have adopted paid family and medical leave, funded measures to improve maternal health, and increased child care subsidy market rates long before now. Instead they have offered those measures as part of a bill to ban abortion care that will put moms, who are the majority of people who have abortions, at risk. North Carolina moms absolutely reject this outrageous choice. We want our access to abortion care to be secure AND we want measures that will make it possible for us to get quality health care, hold jobs and care for our families. We will not choose between our fundamental rights and needs.
“Every state legislator who cares about the health and wellbeing of moms and families should vote against this bill, which will cause grave and irreparable harm to moms and families.”
