Moms Group Urges Both Houses of Congress to Pass Bill Requiring Employers to Comply with Health Care Law
“The Supreme Court’s ruling in Hobby Lobby v. Burwell was a serious blow to women across the country – including many moms – who use birth control. Reliable birth control that permits women to manage how many children to have, and when to have them, has been nothing short of revolutionary—not just for women and mothers, but for our country as a whole. It's improved the health of women and their families, as well as given women and mothers increased access to economic and political power unlike any other time in history.
“The Supreme Court may not recognize that, but clearly Senators Murray, Udall and Durbin, and their colleagues, do. The notion that for-profit corporations can decide what procedures and medications, including contraceptive care, workers can choose under their health care plans based on religious beliefs of the employers is outrageous. We are pleased that the Senators and Representatives introducing legislation to right this wrong (the “Protect Women’s Health from Corporate Interference Act” in the Senate) have heard the voices of our members on this crucial health issue.
“Birth control is a vital part of women’s health care and is covered by health plans without copays or deductibles under the regulations implementing the Affordable Care Act, allowing a woman and her doctor—not her boss—to decide what’s best.
“The economic security and health of mothers and families across our nation are dependent on mothers' ability to control how many children to have, and when to have them. Having that decision and a family’s finances jeopardized because an employer opposes birth control on religious grounds is ludicrous and cruel. We urge both houses to pass this crucial legislation quickly.”
