Moms Celebrate Supreme Court Decision to Uphold Subsidies
“The Affordable Care Act (ACA) was written to ensure that eligible individuals in all states have access to health care subsidies. Today’s Supreme Court decision shows that the Court understands the intent and purpose of the law, and it saves millions of American families from losing their health insurance.
“The financial assistance provided under the ACA, which is the issue at the center of the King v. Burwell case, makes health coverage possible for millions of working Americans for the first time. MomsRising hears from our members across the country who say that thanks to the ACA subsidies, they are finally getting the health insurance that fits their family’s needs.
“Members like Annette Matias of Woodbridge, VA, who after purchasing health insurance through the federal exchange was finally able to get a potentially life-saving operation to remove a uterine tumor. Annette is a working single mom of two and says that she could not afford to keep her insurance without the subsidies.
“Annette is far from alone, more than eight million people have signed up for private insurance in the Health Insurance Marketplace, nearly two-thirds of Americans want Congress to ensure that residents in every state can receive insurance subsidies through the ACA and 71% of people enrolled on the marketplace are satisfied with their health coverage.
“The decision today in King v. Burwell keeps us on the path of ensuring that everyone has access to affordable, quality healthcare. This is wonderful news for all the families who no longer have to choose between going bankrupt and getting treatment for a sick child or for themselves, and for the 17 million[i] who have gained coverage for the first time thanks to the ACA.”

The number for exchange signups alone is just above 10 million and over 7 million of those are through the federally-facilitated marketplaces.
[i] This figure includes people who have gained coverage for the first time due to the ACA, including those covered by Medicaid expansion and other non-marketplace coverage.
