The Health, Autonomy, and Liberty of America’s Moms Have Never Been in More Peril, as We Mark the 52nd Anniversary of Roe v. Wade – But Moms Are Fighting Back
Lisa Lederer, 202/371-1996
“Today, on the 52nd anniversary of the landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Roe v. Wade, because of the shameful 2022 SCOTUS reversal in Dobbs, moms and pregnant people in states across the country are being denied care that would keep them safe and healthy, protect their fertility, and allow them to care for their families. Mothers have lost their lives and the hardship anti-abortion forces have created in the two-and-a-half years since Dobbs has made our country less healthy, less safe, less economically secure, and less successful.
“With Republicans taking power in Congress and the White House, the devastation will almost certainly get even worse. Moms are alarmed that both chambers in Congress are poised to consider H.R. 21, which would threaten health care providers with criminal and civil penalties, interfere with medical care, and intimidate doctors. This legislation is disinformation that perpetuates lies about those who choose abortion and the providers who care for them. At the same time, threats in the courts continue, with one example being rogue Trump-appointed Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk authorizing three states to proceed with an FDA challenge that could make it much harder for people to access medication abortion. And moms expect the Trump administration to once again do all it can to defund family planning and women’s health care.
“Women of color, low-income women, young, rural and immigrant women, people with disabilities, and those who are LGBTQIA+ are suffering the most – but no family is safe in this world without Roe v. Wade. Most people who have abortions are moms, and moms want abortion to be accessible to all who need it, regardless of where they live, their financial status, or the source of their health coverage. Being able to choose if we have children and, if so when and how many children to have, which includes access to abortion care, is a fundamental right. America’s moms will continue to fight for as long as our access to reproductive health care is threatened or denied.”

“Every day that anti-abortion extremists intrude in women’s reproductive health is a day when moms and pregnant people are in danger and our maternal mortality crisis, which especially harms Black and Indigenous women, gets even worse.
“Thanks to abortion opponents, hospitals now routinely turn away pregnant moms whose lives are in danger, women are denied preventive care, doctors face prison for caring for their patients, women who miscarry are arrested and prosecuted, our maternal health crisis is worsening, and our daughters and granddaughters have fewer rights than we did.
“The promise of Roe v. Wade has been shattered, but this will not stand. America’s moms will remain in this fight for as long as it takes. We will not allow government to make our most personal decisions, to deny us health care, and to take away our autonomy and our right to be equal members of society. Forced births and denials of health care are never acceptable. Abortion is health care. Reproductive rights are human rights – and moms will not stand down.”
