There Is No National Emergency! Lawmakers Must Protect the Human Rights of Immigrants and Asylum-Seekers, Moms Leader Says

“Undermining Congress by manufacturing a national emergency in order to build a wall the country neither wants nor needs would be a gross violation of the President’s powers and a dangerous threat to the checks and balances our constitution guarantees.
“President Trump has tried to manufacture a crisis so he can illegally procure funding to build a wall designed only to appease his base. The President’s own security advisors have made clear they do not see immigration at our southern border as a national emergency. It would be reckless and shameful for the President to try to position it as one for political gain.
“While America’s moms are heartened that federal workers and contractors will be spared the economic pain of another shutdown, it is outrageous that Congress continued to fund the federal agencies that have ripped children from their parents and criminalized thousands of families. These agencies are undermining our national interests and they must be held accountable, not just for their unforgivable human rights violations but also for failing to be truthful about the number of children victimized by the horrors they have committed. Congress erred badly in giving the Department of Homeland Security more money, more detention beds and transfer authority – the very mechanism that has allowed these agencies to take funding from programs like FEMA while America’s families are struggling.
“Congress must rein in the agencies that are perpetrating human rights abuses in the name of immigration enforcement and immediately file a lawsuit to strike down the President’s bogus declaration of a national emergency. We need our elected leaders to stand up to the President and regain their power over funding decisions, as granted by the constitution.
“Our nation’s moms will not sit by as the President recklessly uses emergency powers to waste our tax dollars and undermine our democracy.”
