“The fight over raising the debt ceiling, with its grave threats to moms and families, as well as to the economy, should not be happening. Just as Congress passed clean debt ceiling increases not once, not twice, but three times when President Trump held office, Congress should be passing a clean debt ceiling increase now. The days when the GOP has one set of priorities during a Republican administration and then switches to another during a Democratic administration must end. The GOP threats to vulnerable moms and families must end. The GOP threats to crash our economy must end.

“America’s moms want our country to pay its bills. We want to ensure that nobody goes hungry, homeless, or without health care. We want the wealthiest individuals and corporations to finally pay their fair share. And we want to stop being subjected to political manipulation and stunts. Those are the principles that matter most to America’s moms, and they should be the principles that guide Congress as it passes a measure to raise the debt ceiling this week.

“While the compromise the White House and Speaker McCarthy reached is better than the appalling, heartless Limit, Save, Grow Act the House GOP passed last month, it will push SNAP and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families out of reach of some of our most vulnerable moms and families. Further, it’s not lost on moms that the 1% limit on discretionary spending increases through 2025 is essentially a budget cut. It, too, will deny assistance to some of those who need it most.

“Cuts to vital services have not been the price we paid to avoid catastrophic economic default in the past, and it should not be the price we pay now.  As we move through this year, moms will continue to demand Congress pass care infrastructure policies, protect and expand SNAP in the Farm Bill, ensure appropriators protect vulnerable families and communities, and require the wealthiest individuals and corporations to pay their fair share.”
