MomsRising points out that the Graham-Cassidy health care repeal bill would have a devastating impact on women. Cuts to federal funding for Medicaid would be especially damaging as women make up two-thirds of Medicaid’s adult enrollees, with Medicaid covering half of all childbirths in the United States. The Graham-Cassidy plan would also end the ACA’s Medicaid expansion, which has allowed 3.9 million women to gain access to health coverage. In a particularly cruel move, the bill would impose punitive work requirements on Medicaid enrollees, making many women have to return to work after childbirth sooner than they're ready in order to keep their health insurance.
The Republican plan would also allow states to acquire waivers to exempt insurers from covering essential health benefits like maternity care, which could leave new mothers shouldering tens of thousands of dollars in hospital bills. And cuts to Planned Parenthood would leave millions of women without access to the routine (and potentially life-saving) preventive care they need.
“President Trump and Republicans in the US Senate seem to be determined to leave the American people without the lifesaving protections gained under the Affordable Care Act - but the moms of America will not stand by and let that happen,” explained Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, CEO and executive director of MomsRising. “Protecting health care should be a piece of cake - so we’re delivering cupcakes to tell Senators to do their jobs by doing what’s right and oppose this latest attempt to take a wrecking ball to health care and families in the United States.”
