Two Years After SCOTUS Ruled in Dobbs, the Immense Harm to Moms, Families, the Nation Continues
Lisa Lederer, 202/371-1996
“The harm to moms, families, and our nation the U.S. Supreme Court caused with its Dobbs ruling, two years ago today, has been enormous. Moms facing miscarriage or ectopic pregnancies have gone without lifesaving care. Clinics that provided contraception and cancer screenings have closed. People needing abortion care have had to travel hundreds of miles, missing paychecks they need. Doctors have faced threats of prison simply for doing their jobs. Our maternal health crisis, which especially harms Black, Brown and Indigenous women and moms, has gotten even worse.
“The state abortion bans and restrictions SCOTUS allowed are causing the most harm to moms, women of color, low-income women, young, rural and immigrant women, people with disabilities and those who are LGBTQIA+ -- but no part of our nation is unharmed. And this week the devastation could be compounded when SCOTUS, reshaped by three Trump appointees, rules on whether emergency rooms can deny care to people experiencing serious pregnancy complications – pregnancy complications that can destroy their health, end their fertility, and take their lives. Of all the horrors SCOTUS unleashed, the threat that pregnant people, most of whom are moms, will be denied emergency medical care is among the worst.
“Most people who have abortions are moms – and moms want abortion care to be accessible to all who need it. Being able to choose if we have children and, if so, how many children to have, is a fundamental right and it includes abortion care. America’s moms are mobilized, organized, and fighting back. We won’t let our kids grow up with fewer rights than we had.”

“In the two years since the Dobbs ruling, the pro-choice majority has become even larger, even stronger, and even more determined. We’ve won every single abortion-related ballot measure, in purple and red states as well as blue ones, since Dobbs.
“Moms are deeply grateful for the Biden/Harris administration – the most pro-choice administration in our country’s history – for fighting every day to protect our rights and address the maternal health crisis. Conversely, moms are keenly aware that congressional Republicans killed bills to secure our access to contraception and IVF care, and are blocking our efforts to build the care infrastructure – with paid family and medical leave, quality affordable child care, and home- and community-based services – that would allow children to thrive.
“America’s moms want everyone to be able to access the reproductive health care they need, regardless of where they live, their income, or the source of their health coverage. We will remain in this fight every single day for as long as our access to reproductive health care is threatened or denied.”
