Bake sale offers sweet treats withspecial gender wage-gap discounts for women and moms
Seattle, WA — Tuesday, April 12, at 11:30 a.m., MomsRising, Legal Voice, and the Economic Opportunity Institute will be holding an #EqualPay Day Bake Sale at Westlake Park. This bake sale comes with a twist: All women will get at least a 20% gender wage gap discount on baked goods. Moms and women of color will get increased discounts on top of that.
Why the discount? Women in Washington state working full-time, year round, make just 77¢ to a man’s $1.00. The paycheck bite is even bigger for women of color and moms. This big bite out of women’s paychecks keeps families strapped, limits women’s ability to invest in education or save for retirement, and results in less local spending at local businesses. Since women are still expected to pay full price for goods and services, despite earning 20% less than men, the least we can do is give them a break on Equal Pay Day!
Washington State Senator Pramila Jayapal, Plum Bistro owner Makini Howell, and members of MomsRising will be at Westlake Park to mark Equal Pay Day with treats from Hello Robin and a sweet recipe for strong families and a strong economy: equal pay for equal work.
“Smart cookies know that eliminating the wage gap gives everyone a chance to succeed and bolsters our economy by supporting working families,” said Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, CEO and co-founder of MomsRising. “We know that the right recipe for closing the wage gap includes stronger fair pay laws, living wages, paid sick and family leave, and affordable, high-quality early learning and childcare.”
