U.S. House Passage of TRIUMPH for New Moms Act a Significant Step to Support Maternal Mental Health
Lisa Lederer, 202/371-1996
“The U.S. House of Representatives took a significant step to support maternal mental health in this country by passing the TRIUMPH for New Moms Act last night. At this time when up to one in five pregnant and postpartum mothers suffer from a maternal mental health disorder such as depression or anxiety, and the pandemic has exacerbated this crisis, we need the national task force this law would create to streamline existing programs and address maternal mental health and substance use disorders affecting new mothers.
“It is a national disgrace that the United States is the most dangerous place to give birth among all industrialized countries. The problem is getting worse, not better, and Black and Indigenous women have by far the worst health outcomes. It’s past time for Congress to prioritize the health of new moms, their babies and families. We urge the U.S. Senate to quickly pass the TRIUMPH for New Moms Act, and both chambers to pass the Into the Light Maternal Mental Health and Substance Abuse Disorders Act, the Moms Matter Act, and the Black Maternal Health Momnibus. There’s no time to waste.”
