U.S. House Rejection of Hyde Amendment a Welcome Step Toward Reproductive Justice in America

Statement of Diarra Aida Diouf, Campaign Director for Maternal Justice and Reproductive Justice at MomsRising, the online and on-the-ground organization of more than one million mothers and their families, on U.S. House of Representatives passage of a spending bill that does not include the cruel, discriminatory Hyde Amendment.

“For 45 long years, the cruel, discriminatory Hyde Amendment has been a stain on our country, denying health care to low-income women, perpetuating racism, and putting vulnerable women and moms at risk. Today, the U.S. House of Representatives took a bold, long overdue step to end Hyde and its devastating bans on coverage for abortion care. This is a good day for women’s health and for reproductive, racial and economic justice.

“Most people who have abortions in America are moms and they – not politicians – know what is best for their lives and families. Pushing abortion care out of reach for low-income people and people of color puts their health and futures at risk.

“MomsRising is proud to be part of the All*AboveAll coalition, which made today’s victory possible, and we commend our partners for their remarkable work. America’s moms urge the U.S. Senate to follow the House’s lead and put an end to the Hyde Amendment. It’s long past time we make abortion coverage equitable and accessible to all, so everyone can live with dignity and economic security.”
