Violence Against Asian Americans Must End

Statement from leaders of MomsRising, the online and on-the-ground organization of more than one million mothers and their families, on the horrific spike in violence against Asian-Americans:

“America’s moms are horrified by the violence against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) we are seeing from coast to coast, and the hatred and bias that drive it. Every incident of this horrific violence shatters a community and our faith in each other. Our hearts break for the victims and survivors and their families, and for everybody who feels targeted, at risk, and unsafe because of it.

“Race-based hatred and violence are intolerable and betray our ideals as a country. Silence gives sanction and moms will not be silent as this harassment, bias, vandalism, and violence cause immense suffering in Asian American communities. America’s moms stand with all Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders who are experiencing bias, hate or violence. We are committed to the education and justice policies that will bring violence to an end and to healing the racism and divisions that are making our country so much weaker and less safe. Violence against Asian Americans must end.”

“We commend the Biden-Harris administration for recognizing both that communities of color have suffered disproportionately as the pandemic has spread, and that Asian American and other frontline and essential workers of color are making enormous contributions during this challenging time. We call on the Biden-Harris administration to immediately implement interventions and responses that address the root causes of violence and provide culturally and linguistically sensitive services for survivors, victims, and their families. We will continue working closely with the new administration, the Congress, and business and community leaders to end the structural racism that is entrenched in our society.”.

We will continue this work because we recognize that when we all join together, we have the power to dismantle white supremacy and structural racism and to organize in ways that intentionally address interlocking systems of oppression.
