What a Month It Was!

The nation’s leading moms group today cheered the Biden/Harris administration for the progress it made and momentum it created in April to advance a care infrastructure, with paid family and medical leave; quality, affordable child, elder and disability care; fair wages and benefits for care workers; and more.
“The administration’s Month of Action on Care was a powerful and unprecedented combination of meaningful action that will make life better for moms, families, and businesses while boosting our economy, and actions designed to spur further progress,” said MomsRising Executive Director and CEO Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner. “America’s moms are grateful for the Biden/Harris administration’s deep commitment to finding solutions to the most pressing problems moms and families face.”
The administration announced its Month of Action on Care on March 25, with the White House and Small Business Administration (SBA) releasing new actions to support small businesses that offer child care for millions of working families, a new child care guide, and more. A few days later, on March 29, President Biden issued a proclamation naming April 2024 Care Workers Recognition Month. The proclamation said, in part: Every day, care workers dedicate themselves to ensuring the people we love are safe and secure. They watch over our children, assist our parents, and support loved ones with disabilities. Their work makes all other work possible.
A highlight of the month came on April 9, when President Biden joined care workers, moms, caregivers, organizations, and advocates at a rally in Washington, D.C. to describe his plan to build on our progress with investments in child care, home care, paid family and medical leave, tax cuts for workers and families, and other priorities, which will be paid for by making the wealthy and big corporations finally pay their fair share in taxes.
“MomsRising members and leaders were so proud to stand on the stage with President Biden and senior administration officials at that rally in Washington, D.C.,” Rowe-Finkbeiner said. “His remarks were inspirational and demonstrated his deep understanding of the urgent need to build the kind of care infrastructure our economy, businesses, and every society needs to succeed. Without it, children will continue missing out on early learning opportunities, moms will be unable to stay in the workforce, businesses will be unable to find workers, and our economy will continue to suffer. Child care workers deserve living wages – and we need a path to citizenship for immigrant care workers.”
On April 18, MomsRising brought moms and families from 25 states to the U.S. Capitol for the Toddlers’ Choice Awards, presented to members of Congress who have championed high-quality, affordable child care, including U.S. Senator Patty Murray, House Minority Whip Katherine Clark, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, and U.S. Representatives Suzanne Bonamici and Jimmy Gomez. The families urged Congress to pass the $16 billion needed to stabilize our country’s child care system. Getty images from the Toddlers’ Choice Awards are available here.
Throughout the month, the Biden/Harris administration took action to improve access to home care and the quality of home care jobs, and more. “Child care doesn't just lift our families; it lifts our economy,” Rowe-Finkbeiner added. “America’s moms are in this fight to win this fight, for our children, for ourselves, for our nation, and for one another. We are grateful for our allies in the administration and in Congress and urge every lawmaker to support these measures. Care isn’t a partisan issue, and the solutions deserve support from lawmakers on both sides of the political aisle.”
