Statement "Good morning Chairman Neal, Ranking Member Brady, and members of the Committee. My name is Marisa Howard-Karp. I live in Dedham, Massachusetts and I am a proud member of MomsRising. I am a wife, a mother, an only child, and a member of the ‘sandwich generation,’ which means I am often balancing taking care of my young children and taking care of my aging parents. I know from personal experience why we have to talk about the full range of caregiving needs, and not just the needs of new parents, when we talk about the need for paid leave in this country.

Statement “No mother should have to fear that a loved one will be harmed at the hands of those charged with protecting the public. But that is what happened to Sandra Bland and the new video released by WFAA, taken by Bland on her cellphone, belies any claim by Trooper Brian Encinia that he used threats and force on a routine traffic stop because he feared for his life. The newly released video makes very clear that he did not.

Statement “The harmful, discriminatory rule the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services issued today is dangerous, unethical and repugnant to America’s moms, who want health care providers to put patients first and ensure that all people get the health care they need. Today’s rule allows federally-funded health care providers (hospitals, doctors, nurses and other individuals and institutions) to deny care to patients based on a provider’s personal or religious beliefs — and not make decisions based on what is best for the patient.

Statement “The new restrictions President Trump wants to impose on asylum-seekers at the Mexican border — including application fees and denial of work permits — are callous and counterproductive. The memo he released last night would make it harder for us to process asylum-seekers and increase the costs of doing so. He is proposing all the wrong moves once again.

Statement “The horrific violence at the Chabad Synagogue in Poway, California, this weekend, on the last day of Passover -- one of the holiest days of the year for the Jewish community -- is an excruciatingly painful reminder of the price we pay when anti-Semitism and white supremacy go unchecked. Our hearts break for the family of Lori Kaye, who was murdered, and for all those who were injured and terrorized by this brutal, senseless act.

Statement “MomsRising commends the Colorado state Senate for passing SB19-188 today. This is the first time the state Senate has passed a bill moving paid family and medical leave forward in Colorado. We are encouraged that Senators Faith Winter and Angela Williams, the bill sponsors, were able to forge a path forward with an implementation bill that creates a timeline and process for passing the kind of comprehensive paid family and medical leave program Coloradans urgently need.

Statement “Washington State took an important step forward on equal pay today — in a strong bipartisan vote the State Senate passed E.S.H.B. 1696, which bans employers from asking about pay history. The bill was already passed by the State House.
“Washington will join six other states in banning all employers from asking about pay history. It also provides new rights to some job applicants. Upon being offered a position, applicants may request the minimum salary or hourly rate for a position if the employer has at least 15 employees.
