Mom Activist Says New Food Safety Law Puts U.S. ‘One Step Closer to a Healthier Country’

“With the signing of the Food Safety Act, we are one step closer to a healthier country. Food recalls over the last few years have sent cold shocks through the hearts of moms and dads everywhere. It’s hard enough to get pick kids to eat healthy food, without having to worry about whether they might get a potentially fatal food-borne illness from contaminated food.
“Once a contaminated product is in people’s homes, it’s really too late. The danger is out there and families and children’s health and lives hang in the balance. Requiring manufacturers and farmers to ensure that the food they are selling to us is safe only makes sense, instead of trying to track contamination back to its source after thousands get sick or die.
“This important law will also provide for the creation of important national food allergy management guidelines for schools, safeguarding millions of children from life-threatening allergic reactions to foods that are often commonly offered.
“Each year in the U.S., more than 76 million people get sick and more than 5,000 die from food-borne diseases like salmonella and E. Coli. Today, we are taking steps to make our children and our families healthier.
“MomsRising is proud to have been among the organizations that pushed for this legislation. Our members reached out to their Senators and Representatives at key points with phone calls and email messages, urging them to support this crucial bill.”
