MomsRising members to meet with lawmakers, discuss how paid sick days boost our families and economy
ANNAPOLIS – MomsRising members and their children, representing one of the more than 130 organizations behind the Maryland Campaign for Paid Sick Days, will be in Annapolis on Wednesday, Feb. 18 to deliver toy rocket ships and storybooks in support of the Maryland Healthy Working Families Act (SB 40/HB 385). Participants from across the state will remind policymakers that access to paid sick days boosts our families and the economy.
More than 700,000* people in our state cannot earn paid sick days to use when they or a family member are ill. Lack of access to paid sick days creates significant public health risks and disproportionately affects low-wage and service industry workers, often forcing these Marylanders to choose between their health and economic stability. Sponsored by Senator Catherine E. Pugh (D-Dist. 40) and Delegate Luke H. Clippinger (D-Dist. 46), the Maryland Healthy Working Families Act would allow workers to earn up to seven paid sick days per year to use when they or a family member are ill. The legislation also includes access to safe leave for those in need of support and services related to domestic violence, stalking or sexual assault.
