STATEMENT OF KRISTIN ROWE-FINKBEINER, Executive Director & CEO of MomsRising.org, on Donald Trump’s victory in the 2016 Presidential race
“This morning we woke up to a very different America than the polls predicted. Many of us are reeling. Some of our children have difficult questions about their own safety, about their friends, and about the future of our country. But moms never give up, and we never stop fighting to make sure that the United States is a place where every child and family, every mom and dad, and every person can thrive.
 
“We have heard from moms across the nation that the racism, sexism, and xenophobia that came directly out of Donald Trump’s campaign have already been harmful to many of their children, and created widening divides in our nation. We know we can do better. That’s why moms will never give up.
 
“We also recognize the fact that Hillary is a woman and mom, and that she lost is no coincidence. Moms experience even more wage and hiring discrimination than women--and we just witnessed the ultimate in hiring discrimination against the most qualified candidate for President. We all have to roll up our sleeves to bend the arc of our nation’s history toward justice. Democracy isn't a spectator sport.  And we will never give up the fight to combat rampant sexism, racism, and xenophobia that have been heightened during this election,
 
“We know that we’re a powerful force when we come together. We know we are not alone. The vote last night was closer than most news reports are saying: Hillary Clinton won the popular vote and we had major wins in states where our top policy priorities were on the ballot. Both Arizona and Washington state passed important measures on earned paid sick days and raising the minimum wage. In California, important criminal justice reform propositions passed, as did several local public health measures to improve childhood nutrition. On gun safety, Washington state was the second state in the nation to pass the extreme risk protection order, while Nevada now has universal background checks.
 
“We are in it for the long haul. MomsRising is committed to advancing policy and cultural change that make the world a better place for moms and their families. It is with a renewed sense of urgency that we embrace our mission to increase family economic security, decrease discrimination against women and moms, to fight racism, sexism and xenophobia and to build a nation where businesses and families can succeed.
 
“No matter what the election results, we remain the same people of the same country. We stand up for each other and stand together. And together, we move forward.”
