Ahead of Mother’s Day, Members of MomsRising and Allied Groups to Remind Officials: Core American Values, Including Liberty, Justice, Freedom, Caring and Diversity, Must Be Upheld
WASHINGTON, DC -- On Friday, May 12th, ahead of Mother's Day, members of MomsRising and other groups will deliver thousands of Statue of Liberty figures to President Donald Trump, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions and every member of the U.S. Senate. Moms will be standing up for liberty and justice as they remind leaders: Our diversity — and people caring about each other — are what has made our nation strong, innovative and prosperous; not the opposite. Yet right now the rights of immigrant families and Muslims are under direct attack — as is our access to health care. These dangerous policy directions hurt our families, economy, communities, and our children’s future.
Following the march, moms will remind leaders that it’s time to raise the torch for liberty, justice and freedom; not extinguish our light. We've come a long way as a nation together, and we’re not turning our backs on each other, or on the American dream, now.
WHAT: Mother's Day weekend action to deliver thousands of Statues of Liberty, and the message of liberty and justice for everyone, to President Donald Trump, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and members of the U.S. Senate
WHO: Moms, families and supporters of immigrant communities and refugees
WHEN: Friday, May 12, 2017, 10:00am ET
WHERE: Trump International Hotel (1100 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, D.C.)
The parade will include a 12-piece marching band, moms will push strollers filled with the Statue of Liberty figures, and participants will wear Statue of Liberty crowns.
MomsRising, together with Faith in Public Life, National Immigration Law Center, National Women's Law Center, National Council of La Raza, and United We Dream will be raising the importance of liberty, justice and freedom for everyone in response to the administration’s recent anti-immigrant and health care policies, including an increase in ICE raids, the attempt to ban people from Muslim-majority countries from traveling to the United States, and the push for a wall along the Mexican border.
The group will assemble at 9:30am by the Federal Triangle metro station next to the Environmental Protection Agency. At 10am, the parade will proceed to the Trump International Hotel, where members of the immigrant community and advocates will speak, after which participants will walk to the Department of Justice on Constitution Avenue, and then proceed to the U.S. Senate office buildings.
Speakers will include:
- Donna Norton, Executive Vice President, MomsRising
- Rev. Jennifer Butler, CEO, Faith in Public Life
- Jessie Hahn, Labor & Employment Policy Attorney, National Immigration Law Center
- Manar Waheed, Legislative and Advocacy Counsel, American Civil Liberties Union
